The Morrill Act, also known as the Land Grant Act, was signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1862. This act, named after its sponsor, Vermont congressman Justin Smith Morrill, gave each state thirty-thousand acres of public land for each Senator and Representative it had in congress. These numbers were based on the census of 1860.

Roscoe Pound

Roscoe Pound (1870-1964). Nathan Roscoe Pound was born in 1870, in Lincoln, Nebraska, the son of Stephen Bosworth Pound, a lawyer and judge, and Laura Biddlecombe Pound. His parents were New Yorkers who immigrated to Nebraska. Pound received his early education at home from his mother, who thought public education was unacceptably poor at that time.

Nathan Jules Gold was born on May 28, 1894, in Hampton, Iowa, the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Gold. He moved to Lincoln, Nebraska in 1902 with his parents and lived there for the rest of his life.

Cooper Foundation

Joseph H. Cooper was born in Lithuania in 1885 and later emigrated to the United States with his family: parents Wolf and Brina Coopersmith, five brothers and one sister. As a young man, he worked in movie theatres in New York City. He lived in New York for the rest of his life, but went on to build a chain of movie theatres, known as Cooper Theatres Inc., in Nebraska, Oklahoma and Colorado.

Cornhusker Bank

Cornhusker Bank began its storied history in 1903 as Farmers State Bank, located in Davey, Nebraska in northern Lancaster County. Our original fourteen stockholders invested eight thousand dollars in capital, elected officers, fixed the Cashier’s salary at fifty dollars per month, and opened for business on August 24, 1903.

Campbell’s Nurseries and Garden Center

Campbell’s Nurseries and Garden Center, Inc. was founded in 1912 by Claude C. Campbell, then only 34 years old, at 28th and Vine Street, Lincoln, Nebraska. Claude, employed by the U.S. Government as a railway mail clerk, had a love of plants and grew a large garden in his backyard.

Roger Larson

Roger Larson was born October 28, 1925, on a farm near Wausa, Nebraska to Ted and Alveda Larson, who were second generation Swedish immigrants. With a strong sense of duty to his country, Roger applied for and was accepted into the Air Force Cadet Program in 1943 and eventually attained the rank of Captain and the Honor of Group Bombardier-Navigator in the Twentieth Air Force.
